In 2025 OpenAI acquired his AI-hardware startup io for ~$6.4B, with Ive taking deep creative and design responsibility across OpenAI and io. He and Sam Altman are building a screenless, voice-first AI companion device — described by Altman as more 'peaceful' than a smartphone — with initial production planned at 40-50M units via Foxconn (shifted from Luxshare, made in the US/Vietnam). The first device was targeted for an H2 2026 reveal but reportedly slipped to no earlier than 2027; multiple form factors are being explored, including an earbud ('Sweetpea') and a pen-style device ('Gumdrop'), and the 'io' name is being dropped.
